Our First Macrame Workshop

This past weekend we kicked off our first workshop at Belle Surf by bringing back the 70's and creating beautiful macrame plant hangers!

Little Feral is a macrame wizard, literally. She travels around the world sharing all of her macrame talents and we were lucky enough to have her host a workshop at our café. She made the day trip from Oahu specifically for our event, so to say that we are grateful is an understatement. We had an amazing turn out, it truly was a blast. All guests left with bellies full of delicious crepes and also with their own, personalized plant hanger to take home and hang up in their hale (home).

Macrame has been around for quite some time, but it has been making a recent comeback. It is the art of knot tying and is believed to have originated by Arabian weavers many, many centuries ago. In the 70's it was common to see macrame made by kids in summer camps to bring home and hang up throughout the house. Not only can you make plant hangers from macrame like we did during the workshop, but intricate wall hangers are also an option, even macrame necklaces have been spotted in magazines and stores as well.

Although the workshop has come and passed, it is not to late to learn how to make your own macrame! There are many resources online and in books showing how to create the different knot techniques that are essentially, what is macrame. All you need is some string and two hands, and you're ready to make your own. The best part about macrame is that the options are endless. Get crafty, get inspired, and go for it!
